Daily Discovery #85: Maria Kelly
Steeped in a foggy atmosphere of regret and fear, Maria Kelly offers the complete antithesis to yesterday’s daily discovery
You’ll pick up on the tone instantly. Maria Kelly’s vocal dynamics detail the story with every curve of a her tongue. They’re warming, tender and smooth; like that first sip of hot chocolate that makes you join her for the ride. This is her latest single, Stitches, similair in style to that of Daughter and of course the neu-folk queens of Lucy Rose and Laura Marling.
The track follows in the same direction as her more optimistic record, Black and Blue. It features a slightly more maturing of sound to her debut tracks, greater production and utilizes the beauty of simple strings with a rumbling guitar. They both flow through tales like a gentile stream flowing on into the distance, marking various points of change throughout Maria’s life.
Stitches is a song that wears its heart on its sleeve. It’s released as part of a EP due within this year alongside a few live dates from Maria. Currently on a ‘song writing retreat’ she’s a little off grid. Although has created a snapchat. ‘mariakellymusic’ if you want to catch up.
Stitches is out now via Veto Records.
