Artist: Amy Ayanda
Cape Town
Release Date: October 2017
Three Words: Poignant, Tribal, Power

This track is taken from Amy Ayanda’s EP Ab Ovo released last month. Every track provides a different electronic atmosphere to indulge in, but this track is the stand out for us. The production is really compelling, and the sense of reluctance and distaste in the lyrics are delivered amazingly well in the vocals. Here’s the story of the Mama Feat. Push Push:

“Inspired by Sylvan Esso’s “Hey Mami”, Mama was written and composed as a push-back to the men who attempt to exercise control over womxn’s bodies, with their words and gaze. Echoing phrases that are shouted, muttered and whispered in public spaces on a daily basis in order to drain womxn of their power, the track hints at the possibility of an alternative future; a future where womxn’s bodies are theirs and theirs alone.”

Short for time? Two tracks off the EP to be sure to listen to are Heavy Hand and Bicycle Wheels. Here’s the full EP:
