Daily Discovery #20: Holly Macve
Rueful and sorrowful, built on simplicity, HOLLY MACVE shares the video for her newest track baring slight resemblance to Lana Del Rey.
One of the first lines of Corner of My Mind pinpoints the tone for the track. “The darkness closes in”. It’s a sad ballad with the charm of folk. Holly Macve is a one-off.
Her haunted unpredictable vocals slide between notes building a bleak atmosphere. It’s definitely a tricky one to sing along to. The low piano chords build drama and the repeating guitar adds to the darkness.
When you watch the video for the track it completes the listening experiences. Bella Union released the video last week. It is black and white with time slowed, perfectly complimenting the darkness exuded in the track. And it’s simple; mirroring the minimal instrumentation on the track. Apparently the idea for recording the video was not to plan it and see what happened. It appears to have worked. It’s the same preparation that produced the great record. Within two hours, Holly had written the track whilst sat in her bedroom in Brighton.
Corner of My Mind is the second track Holly Macve has released since being signed to Bella Union in 2015. She grew up in Yorkshire but moved to Brighton where she was noticed by the label at an open mic night.
“I had a tip-off to go to a basement bar where she was playing. In a room full of beery boys chatting across all the music beforehand, the minute Holly opened her mouth the room fell silent. Hers is a rare gift.” – Simon Raymond.
Holly’s previous track We Don’t Know Where We’re Going gives off the same sense of mourning with the brilliant sliding between notes.
